Physical Education

What is Physical Education?

At Holly Grove Primary School, we acknowledge that Physical Education (PE), sport and physical activity play a crucial role in the physical development, health and well-being of our children.  This allows pupils to lead full and valuable lives through participation in a wide variety of enjoyable and inspiring activities.  These activities include competitive and non-competitive games.

Aims

Our aim is to:

  • Engage, inspire and nurture every child's potential through PE and school sport that meets the needs, interests and aspirations of our young athletes.
  • Provide the children with learning experiences that will enable them to develop the knowledge, the confidence, the skills, have the motivation and the ability to lead a physically active life.
  • Encourage our children to observe the importance of our TORCH values alongside the sports values of determination, passion, respect, honest, self-belief and teamwork.

What our pupils say about PE

Intent

Our PE curriculum aims to provide children at Holly Grove with a wide variety of physical skills and knowledge that will enable them lead a happy, healthy and active lifestyle.  We want them to embrace PE and understand that fitness can take on many forms and enjoy the prospect of sport.  We want our children to feel confident about sport and have the attitude of 'giving it a go'. Pupils need to understand that sport is fun and that their are many types of sport.

 Sports Ambassadors 2025/2006

This year, our Year 6 pupils are once again taking on the exciting role of Sports Ambassadors, helping to make playtimes more active, inclusive, and fun across the school.

Each term, a new group of children from Year 6 take part in a specialist training session delivered by Progressive Sports. During this session, the children learn what it takes to be an effective sports leader, including understanding the key qualities of leadership, recognising how to keep activities safe, and gaining confidence in delivering a range of games.

They are also taught the rules of a wide variety of activities and shown how to lead these confidently with younger pupils. Working alongside their coach, the children help to create a fair rota, ensuring every trained ambassador has the chance to support active playtimes throughout the term.

When on duty, our Sports Ambassadors can be easily spotted in their bright red caps and bibs, proudly representing leadership across the playground. They are responsible for setting up equipment, organising games, and encouraging children of all ages to join in with positive, energetic play.

We are incredibly proud of our Year 6 pupils for embracing this role with such enthusiasm and responsibility. Their leadership helps create a happy, active, and supportive environment for everyone at Holly Grove.

New Sports Participation Award System for 2026

Holly Grove Primary School is delighted to introduce an exciting new Sports Participation Award System for 2026. This initiative celebrates pupils who take part in extra‑curricular sporting events and encourages children to try new sports, build confidence, and enjoy being active.

Why We’re Introducing the Award System

At Holly Grove, sport is an important part of school life. We know that taking part in sport helps children develop teamwork, resilience, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Thanks to the wide range of events organised in Lichfield and Burntwood by our School Games Officer, pupils have many opportunities to represent the school.

We are committed to attending as many events as possible and continue to seek out new and exciting sporting opportunities, giving children the chance to experience a variety of sports beyond the curriculum.

Half‑Term Participation Certificates

From this year onwards, any child who takes part in an extra‑curricular sporting event will receive a Sports Participation Certificate. These certificates are presented in assembly at the end of each half term to celebrate each child’s effort, commitment, and pride in representing Holly Grove.

End‑of‑Year Sports Participation Awards

As pupils take part in different sporting activities across the year, they will work towards one of our three special Sports Participation Awards. These are based on the number of different sports a child participates in.

🥉 Bronze Award

Awarded for taking part in 2 different sports

🥈 Silver Award

Awarded for taking part in 3 different sports

🥇 Gold Award

Awarded for taking part in 4 or more different sports

Please note:

  • Taking part in the same sport multiple times (e.g., several football matches) counts as one sport.
  • A multi‑sports event counts as its own separate sport.

A Celebration to Look Forward To

At the end of the academic year, we will hold a special Sports Award Assembly to celebrate all pupils who have taken part in sporting events. Bronze, Silver, and Gold certificates will be presented, recognising the enthusiasm and dedication shown by our young athletes.

We are extremely proud of our pupils and look forward to celebrating their sporting achievements throughout the year!
