Holly Grove Primary Academy

What is Music?

At Holly Grove Primary Academy, we believe that music is a unique and powerful form of communication that can change the way pupils feel, think and act. Furthermore, we feel that there is great value in combining creativity with emotion that enables personal expression, reflection and development.

At Holly Grove we aim that all children will:

  • Develop the ability to listen to, and appreciate a wide variety of music, including that which has a specific purpose.
  • Have opportunities to explore and express ideas about music, in a variety of ways eg through dance.
  • Explore a range of musical elements, for example: pitch, tempo and dynamics.
  • Be encouraged to have an active involvement in creating and developing musical ideas using voices and instruments (tuned and untuned).
  • Develop a sense of group identity and togetherness through composing, rehearsing and performing music with others, to an audience.
  • Develop self-discipline and creativity, aesthetic sensitivity and fulfilment.

"There is no such thing as an unmusical person" - Hans Werner Henze

All children will:

  • Follow the programme of study for the National Curriculum through using  the Charanga Scheme of Music.
  • Engage in activities linked to the key components of Music; listening, singing, composing, improvising and appraising.
  • Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
  • Learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
  • Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

Music Curriculum Intent

The documents below indentify the key elements which we believe are important to incorporate into our Music lessons. At Holly Grove, our music lessons are practical, exploratory have a child-led approach to musical learning.

Through each Unit and each lesson, the interrelated dimension of music weave through the units and lessons to encourage the development of musical skills as the learning progresses through listening and appraising, differing musical activities (including creating and exploring) and performing.

Enrichment Opportunities in Music

On Wednesday 15th February 3 musicians from the Staffordshire Music Service came to perform a concert taking us on a journey through Space and Time. We learnt so much about pieces of music from Holst, Mozart and even some more recent pieces from film and television. We also learnt about the instruments that were being played during the concert.
