Year 3/4 Book Club Explore Our Author of the Month: Michael Morpurgo!
Our Year 3/4 Book Club have been diving into the wonderful world of our Author of the Month, Michael Morpurgo. The children really enjoyed researching and discovering fascinating facts about him—especially as our current class reading book is The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips.
Michael Morpurgo is one of the UK’s best‑known and most loved children’s authors. He has written over 120 books for young readers, including much‑loved titles such as War Horse and Private Peaceful. Born on 5 October 1943 in St Albans, Hertfordshire, Morpurgo originally worked as a teacher, where he discovered that the stories he told his class were the ones they loved most—this inspired him to begin writing books of his own.
Morpurgo also helped to create the role of Children’s Laureate, a special national award that celebrates the importance of children’s literature. He went on to serve as the third Children’s Laureate from 2003–2005.
Another fact was that in 1976, he and his wife founded a charity called Farms for City Children, giving thousands of urban children the chance to experience life on a working farm.
Our Book Club had a brilliant time exploring his life, writing style, and the themes in his books. They are now even more excited to continue reading Adolphus Tips and to spot the features of Morpurgo’s storytelling as they go.
A wonderful author study and a fantastic start to our reading adventures this term!
