Year 2 Explore Micro‑Habitats in Forest School!

Year 2 have had an exciting week in Science as we continued our learning about living things and their habitats. This lesson focused on micro‑habitats—the small, carefully balanced environments where different minibeasts live.

We began by discussing the types of minibeasts we might not find during this season and why. The children shared thoughtful ideas about how colder weather affects where creatures choose to hide and how active they are at this time of year.

To build on our learning, we took the lesson outdoors and made great use of our Forest School area. The children searched under logs, stones, leaves and tree bark, discovering the different micro‑habitats that local minibeasts call home. Every discovery brought excitement—especially when someone spotted a wriggling worm, speedy woodlouse or tiny spider.

The lesson also gave us a wonderful chance to use our maths skills. As we explored, the children counted how many minibeasts they found in each habitat, compared the totals and thought about patterns in their results. Back in the classroom, they recorded their findings in a pictogram, turning their outdoor exploration into clear and organised data.

This lesson was a brilliant blend of Forest School, Science and Maths, encouraging curiosity, teamwork and careful observation. Year 2 showed fantastic enthusiasm and impressive scientific thinking throughout.

Well done, Year 2—wonderful micro‑habitat detectives!
