Year 1 Get Chopping in DT!
Year 1 had a fantastic afternoon in Design & Technology as they learned how to prepare fruit safely and confidently. The children were full of enthusiasm as they explored the different steps involved in preparing food—just like real chefs!
The lesson began with handwashing, and together we discussed why clean hands are important before touching food. The children were brilliant at explaining how this helps keep germs away and keeps us healthy.
Next, they learned how to hold a knife safely. Everyone practised carefully, making sure their fingers were well out of the way. They also learnt two useful techniques for holding fruit while cutting:
- The claw grip, where fingers curl back like a little claw
- The bridge hold, where the hand makes a bridge over the food
The children quickly became confident with these skills and were very proud of themselves.
There was lots of excitement as many children announced they were going home to show their parents how to chop food safely. We hope families are ready for some budding chefs in their kitchens!
A brilliant, practical lesson full of confidence‑building, healthy eating skills, and huge smiles. Well done, Year 1!
