Our Reception class has been busy developing their Understanding the World and early geography skills as part of our Winter theme. The children have shown wonderful curiosity as they explored where we live and how our world looks from different perspectives.

We began by using Google Earth, zooming in to spot familiar places and even trying to find some of our own houses. The children were fascinated by seeing our local area from above and enjoyed recognising roads, buildings, and landmarks.

Next, we explored a globe, talking about the meaning behind its colours:

• Blue for water
• Green for land
• White for snowy and icy regions

This sparked lots of discussion about Winter, cold places, and where snow can be found around the world.

To build on this, we used our large atlas to search for different countries and continents, encouraging the children to point out places they had heard of or wanted to learn more about. Finally, the children worked together on a world map jigsaw, using their problem‑solving skills to match the pieces to the correct locations.

Our Reception children approached each activity with enthusiasm, teamwork, and growing confidence. It has been wonderful to see their sense of wonder as they explore maps, globes, and digital tools to better understand the world around them.
